Gender: Male Series: Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE Background: (Long background is long and contains spoilers) In the country of Valeria, twins are considered bad omens, and so it was very bad luck that Fay was one. He was born under the name Yuui and his brother was named Fay, and the kingdom - which had been looking forward to the birth of the new prince - shunned them immediately. Their father died of a sickness not long after they were born, and their mother committed suicide sometime later out of shame for having borne them. Without their parents to protect them, the twins were told they could either kill one of them and have the other live normally, or they would both be sent away to a secure location (it is important to remember that, when they were given their decision, they were four or five years old). The people of Valeria feared killing the twins themselves in case the misfortune they caused would be passed on to them, and were also scared of the twins' immense magical power. Yuui and Fay, of course, decided to stay together. They were sent to a valley where the people of Valera dumped the bodies of their sinners and where magic could not be used. Fay was imprisoned at the top of a huge tower that stood in the centre of the valley and Yuui outside it, but still trapped in the valley by a huge wall. We don't know how long they spend there, but Yuui never lost hope. He was determined to climb over the wall, get help, and rescue his brother, and then they would go somewhere they could be happy together. However, things started going terribly wrong in Valeria. Instead of the occasional body being dumped in the valley, there were suddenly hundreds. Eventually, the Emperor of Valeria jumped in, and told the twins what had happened: he had gone mad and killed everyone, and he told Yuui it was the fault of the twins of misfortune. They would be punished by being the only two people left alive in the entire world. Naturally this had quite an affect on Yuui, and it's the first turning point in his life: when he starts to believe he really is cursed. He is, later. One day, after an unknown amount of years, a hand appeared in front of the twins from nowhere and told each of them they could choose one twin to escape. They both chose each other, but it was Fay who died. He fell from the tower and landed in front of Yuui. The hand - which belonged to Fei Wang Reed, Tsubasa's Dr Evil - altered Yuui's memory to make him believe he had chosen himself to escape, and he believed he had stolen his brother's life for many years. As a result, he did not object to being cursed as punishment: if he meets someone with magic more powerful than him, he will try to kill that person (this is a one-off thing, however). Fay does not remember the second curse, which is that if he tries to leave Celes a second time without killing its king, Ashura, then he will be trapped there. He was also told of the journey he would take later, with Princess Sakura, Syaoran (a clone Dr Evil had made), and the ninja Kurogane. He was told the ninja would be an agent of 'the Witch' (being Yuuko) and that, should he try to interfere with FWR's plans, Fay was to kill him: and as a reward, he would get his brother back. Understandable, isn't it, how reluctant Fay was to fall in love with the ninja. As FWR promised, Yuui was released not long afterwards, by King Ashura of the world of Celes. When asked what his name was, Yuui said it was Fay, in an attempt to hide what he believed he had done. King Ashura took Fay and the real Fay's body to Celes and named the living twin Fay Flourite, after the fluorite stone that was believed to bring good luck in Celes. Young Fay was trained in magic and became a D-rank magician (hence the random initial in his name) and began to believe he wasn't misfortune, as he got the opportunity to save so many lives. When he knew enough magic, he made a young girl named Chii to guard his brother's body and keep it company. It was also in Celes that Ashura gave Fay his tattoo, to stop his magic growing more powerful, for every time he used it he grew stronger. This is confusing, as surely if Fay had more powerful magic it would be harder for someone to be stronger than him, but Ashura had a reason: he wanted to be the one Fay killed. As time went by, people in Celes kept dying, and Fay was the one who discovered why: Ashura. He was a monster who grew stronger the more he killed, and it eventually got the point where Fay was going to have to kill him. Unable to do that, and once again believing he was misfortune, Fay cast a spell to put him to sleep and fled to the Space-Time Witch's shop, to wish for the ability to travel between worlds in an attempt to escape killing Ashura. After transporting himself out of Celes, Fay arrives in Yuuko’s shop (see xxxHolic). Yuuko is a powerful witch who deals in wishes. Fay arrives there as Kurogane does – Kurogane having been sent away from his home country of Nihon by Tomoyo-hime (a crossover of Tomoyo from Card Captor Sakura) to learn ‘the meaning of true strength’. Before them Syaoran arrived, with Sakura-hime of Clow (variations of the main characters in Card Captor Sakura). Sakura’s memories had been transformed into feathers and scattered across various worlds. Without them, she would die. Syaoran, Kurogane, and Fay all wished to travel worlds, and because that has a very high price, Yuuko took from each of them their most precious thing. Fay had to give her the phoenix marking on his back. Later we learn the marking inhibits his magical powers. However, he refuses to use them, perhaps because of the absence of the marking. Within the group, Fay seems to have formed a strong connection to the children. He seems to favour Sakura slightly more than Syaoran, perhaps because they’re both the ‘females’ in the family (Kurogane’s the ‘daddy’ and Fay is the ‘mommy’). But that’s not to say he doesn’t care for the others. When Syaoran is wounded, Fay is usually the second one to attempt to heal him (after Sakura) and as for Kurogane? Kurogane gets under Fay’s skin. He seems to be one of few people who can. He seems to be one of a fewer group of people Fay lets do so, although against his will. Fay has also formed a unique relationship with the creature Mokona. They appear to inhabit the same wavelength. The group – or ‘family’ – travel worlds, getting into trouble and having fun in the name of finding Sakura’s feathers. But as this is CLAMP, the fun doesn’t last: when they arrive in Tokyo, everything bad happens at once. The real Syaoran wakes up, meaning Cloney loses his heart and eats Fay’s eye when the mage attempts to save him. Fay’s bleeding and injured, and Kurogane saves his life by turning him into a vampire. Fay turns very cold towards Kurogane, calling him by his full name, and it appears during the next arc that the only member of the family he still interacts with is Sakura. More bad stuff happens in Infinity – Ashura wakes up, Fay stabs Sakura, and her soul and body split, soul (carried by Freya) going inside a dream and body heading to Celes with the awakened Chii. The TRC gang, of course, have to go after her, and they head to Celes first, each agreeing to pay part of the price to get them there. In a little side note that turns out to be very important, Fay seals Kurogane’s sword in his arm so it is always available for him. They land in Celes, and Ashura shows them all Fay’s past. Fay momentarily goes crazy and attacks Kurogane, but during the fighting real-Fay’s body is disturbed and when Fay makes an attempt to save it, Kurogane tells him to ‘let him sleep’. Kurogane then battles Ashura, and is injured badly in the side. As Fay still refused to attack the kind, Ashura moves to attack Syaoran and Sakura’s body, which is what gets Fay to finally do something. He attacks Ashura, but in the end it’s Kurogane who kills him – triggering the second curse. Because Fay was not the one to kill Ashura, the world of Celes begins to collapse in on itself. Fay uses the last of his magic and, coughing up blood, attempts to get the group out but can only save Sakura, Syaoran, and Mokona. Syaoran detaches Mokona’s earring at the creature’s instruction and uses it to open a small hole in the remains of Celes, through which Kurogane escapes and attempts to take Fay. However, it is not enough magic for both of them, and Kurogane lets go of Fay’s hand to leave him alone in the remains of Celes. Yeah, right. Kurogane does possibly the most badass thing a CLAMP character ever has or will and cuts off his own arm to save Fay. The magic Fay had stored in that arm is enough to get him out, and the group leave for Nihon, where they are tended to personally by Princess Tomoyo. By this point, Fay’s problems have pretty much all been resolved, and he knows he’s doing more harm than good by pushing Kurogane away, because it just causes the ninja to do big overdramatic things like cutting off body parts. He goes back to calling Kurogane by nicknames, and is a happier, calmer person. He pays for Kurogane to get a new arm from Piffle (a world in which there was another Tomoyo) with the remains of his magic, which is non-fatal now because he is a vampire, and he can depend on Kurogane. His eye is now golden. He is taken after Syaoran challenges Seishirou to a fight. He is whisked away to the City as Tomoyo sets up the kekei. (Moodtheme by sapphire_heaven on LJ) | |||||||||
